Horticulture apprenticeship

This apprenticeship is suitable for roles across industry including maintenance of community spaces and private gardens, food and plant growing and production, maintaining wildlife habitats as well as careers in sustainability and biodiversity.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

You will learn a range of core knowledge, skills and behaviours including:
- Maintenance and implementation of soft/hard landscape features
- Maintain plant health, soil cultivation, plant identification
- Operating and maintaining tools, equipment and machinery
- Comply with biosecurity and invasive species legislation, industry guidance and organisational policies
- Complying with health and safety legislation
- Communicating with supervisor, colleagues, public and others.

Within the horticulture pathway, you will also learn:
- Seed sowing and methods of propagation and pruning
- Using hand held power tools considering the environmental conditions affecting development of plants

STUDY & QUALIFICATIONS

Delivered one day a week at WCUC’s Lackham campus during term time only (can be delivered remotely if needed) and in the workplace with a visit from your tutor every 10 to 12 weeks.

As part of the apprenticeship programme, you’ll need to record a minimum of 6 hours per week ‘off-the-job’ training time. This can include college attendance, work shadowing, training, workshops, online learning, tutor sessions, revision, webinars, industry visits – anything that supports your learning on the apprenticeship and supported by your dedicated assessor.

This programme is assessed by a multiple choice test, practical tasks observed by an assessor and a professional discussion based upon portfolio of evidence in preparation for EPA. The tutor will arrange college lessons covering both theory and practical learning.

On successful completion of the Horticulture or Landscape Construction Operative Level 2 Apprenticeship you will hold the qualification of the Apprenticeship Standard and Level 3 Emergency First Aid plus PA1 and PA6 (Horticulture pathway) or Abrasive Wheels Certificate (Landscape pathway).
